Know your team and you will come to know what it means to produce a quality product in an efficient manner. Capitalize on strengths, minimize the focus on weaknesses and put your egos aside. Make room for others and you will find that creative juices will flow and that education will abound.
Capitalize on Strengths:
Let those who are good at what they do just do their job. They will do it faster and better than you can if that is not your strength. For example: I have no graphic design skills whatsoever. Sure, I know what I do and don't like when I see it, but as far as developing concepts- not so much. I am ok with that and quite frankly so is my team.
Minimize Focus on Weakness:
Focusing on the negative is a great way to diminish the team-esteem. Therefore, forget about what I can't do (graphic design) and focus on what I can do- content writing. After all, it really doesn't matter what my weakness is because that is why I have someone on my team that can do the job.
In addition to this, when you are working with a team, what you can do that has no skill associated with it at all is to support the other team members. That is called back-up! A united front is the best front to portray to a client no matter how big or small. One crack in the team's armor and you might as well have a crack in the dam and no dike to protect it from destruction.
Leave Egos at the Door
When you are working as a team, it is important to listen and to learn to embrace new ideas and concepts. Giving up control can be so much of a challenge as you wrestle in your mind about what you "know" to be right. However, if you don't learn to let others contribute, you may lose out on the opportunity to grow. Creativity can be stifled and team work might as well not exist. Who needs a team if you are the only one that can do anything right anyway. Correct?
Well, I have to admit that since being a part of this 4Web team, I have learned a great deal. I have learned a bunch about the all mighty CMS called Joomla! I have learned that I know more than I think I do on any given day. I have also learned that my team is exceptionally skilled and that we need each other in order to be successful. Most importantly, I have learned what I am not good at and that it's ok because I get to leave that up to the Professionals.
Working with a team of professionals is why I am in this company today. I wanted an opportunity to stretch and grow and so far so good. Whether the team is comprised of clients, fellow professionals in the field or my own company team ... team work is Fabulous!
