Reaction to Jakob Nielsen's post, Photos as Web Content

Posted by Jen Kramer in web content , usability

Jakob Nielsen posted an interesting article on his blog regarding photos as web content.

Essentially, he has argued that some images are valued by users, while others are not. Using eye-tracking studies, he shows the usefulness of some images (product images, photos of real people), while other images are completely ignored (stock photos).

His article can be summed up by his conclusion at the end of the article:

Joomla Ethics 101: Just because it's an ebook, it still costs money. Pay for it.

We've all heard about the music pirating going on around the web. Why pay 99 cents for a song when you can download it for free? All of those musicians are rich and famous anyway, so why would they care if I take a copy of their song?

Likewise, there's a bunch of ebooks out there. Those book authors must also be rich and famous. Why would they care if I get their book for free somewhere?

I take posts like these very personally. Why? Because you're stealing from me.

Last night, the Joomla leadership announced that they were looking for request for comment on a social networking community to reside at Joomla.org.

We know it will either be called social.joomla.org or people.joomla.org. We know that it's been decided that JomSocial will run the community.

We are asked for input about whether this is something we'd use, what we want included, and how we think we'd use it.

Is your Website Getting Stale?

Posted by Samantha Bovat in web content , web business

Try the One Week Spruce Up Plan

There is nothing worse than knowing that your website is getting stale and not knowing how to give it new life. It is time to freshen up your content already! You don't always need to throw out the baby with the bathwater, but you can take a few minutes each day to get the job done.

Baby steps.... It's all about baby steps because tackling the whole site can be overwhelming. So take things one at a time.  Every day- gather your team for 15 minutes, decide what is new or old, assign each task to someone and hold him or her accountable for getting the info to you by the end of the day.
